On September 26th, Keep Growing Detroit (KGD) in partnership with Cultivate Michigan hosted a field trip for Detroit gardeners to visit a local apple orchard. Thirty-four participants met at the KGD office and headed out to Hy's Cider Mill in Bruce, Michigan. On the bus were several families excited about sharing the tradition of apple picking with their children. When we arrived, we were given a short tour of the orchard and a run-down of the varieties that were currently ripe: Gala, Jonathan, McIntosh, JonaGold and Cortland. The orchard is quite impressive, with 200 acres of apples. It was a great day for picking and the apples were prime quality. Hy's also has a huge hydraulic cider press that was really cool to see!
